Philosophy and Vision
Ethical Culture is....

- a religion that looks toward a future where morality, spirituality, and science will no longer be at odds, but where each will deepen our understanding of the others.

-a forward-looking religion that embraces tradition and has its feet planted firmly in the present day.

-recognizes the unique worth of every human being, and celebrates the strength that comes from diversity.

Its guiding principle is an Ethics based on real people living in the real world - a single theory or description couldn't possibly encompass it. That said, there are a few concepts that can help give a better idea of Ethical Culture's complex flavor:

Human Worth and Uniqueness
Eliciting the Best

Eight Commitments of Ethical Culture

And for a more in-depth look at the development and direction of Ethical Culture, both as a religion and as a philosophy, the Leaders' Council published a well-developed vision statement in 1991, entitled A Concept Map for Ethical Culture. Subtitled "Toward a Philosophical Consensus", it elucidates many of the essential threads that give the movement its identity. The issues in this document are still current to this day.
