Herb Silverman was transformed from mild-mannered math professor to political activist while teaching at the College of Charleston after learning that the South Carolina Constitution prohibited atheists from holding public office. He will talk about his fight to change the constitution and his new book Candidate Without a Prayer: An Autobiography of a Jewish Atheist in the Bible Belt.  Herb also founded the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry in South Carolina, the Atheist-Humanist Alliance at his college, and is founder and president of the Secular Coalition for America.

Brooklyn Councilman Jumaane Williams is one of the leading critics of the NYPD’s Stop & Frisk strategy subjecting young men of color to unwarranted searches. Councilman Williams himself was stopped by police while attempting to attend a closed event at the Brooklyn Museum during the Caribbean Day parade. He will fill us in on the battle and evaluate the prospects of community policing.
